About the MAC and Doug & Nancy Mahlum

Montana Athletic Club – Doug and Nancy Mahlum

The Montana Athletic Club began construction in September of 1992 and was completed in 1993. At 20,000 square foot, this full-service facility has developed a loyal membership, and became a stalwart of the Bigfork community. During the past 25 years of operation, the Montana Athletic Club-Bigfork has maintained a robust business, through the vagaries of the national and local economies. In 2003, a major expansion allowed for continued member satisfaction. 2007 saw a major remodel, with the additional of 8,000 square feet of physical therapy, functional fitness and studios added in 2015. In 2018/19, another addition/remodel was completed. This added four more treatment rooms to RiverBend Physical Therapy, a 2,400 SF Functional Training area and extensive remodel of the lobby and lockerrooms, bringing total square footage to 32,000. Currently, the MAC has 2,500 members – in a town of 4,200 residents.

Doug has been in the fitness business for 33 years, most of those working with Jack Tawney on various facilities throughout Montana. They are partners in the Peak clubs in Great Falls and Missoula. Doug also does consulting work with his company Planetary Fitness Consulting, notably with The Wave in Whitefish, MT. He has also worked on facilities in New Hampshire, Minnesota, Hawaii, England and throughout Montana.

Nancy handles Member/Staff Relations and is integral in the planning and programming of the MAC. Nancy and Doug have been married 30 years and have two children, both of which have started off in their own careers. She constantly reminds Doug they need to retire, while Doug counters they need to get all the bills paid first!

Kelsey Kirby

Front Desk Manager

Born in Denver, I grew up skiing in the mountains of Colorado and playing lacrosse. When life shifted, I decided to follow my passion for diving and move to Santa Barbara, CA where the Channel Islands would be accessible. There, I spent a few years exploring down below and attending college, while missing the changing of the seasons and my family. Early 2019, I decided to make another change, packed up my two dogs and moved back to my much missed mountains and my family here in Bigfork. I love working at the MAC and spending free time in the snow or swimming in the lakes.

Ella Boroson

Finance

Ella moved to Montana from Texas in 1998, finding a home at Eagle Bend in Bigfork. While living in Texas, she worked at a CPA firm in Dallas. Ella enjoys golf, hiking and working out at the MAC. But mostly golfing.

Christine Sandry

Front Desk assistant manager

I have been working at the Front Desk for the past 10 wonderful years! My husband Paul and I have been members of the club since it opened in 1993. We have raised three boys here in Bigfork and the MAC has been a huge part of that. Working here at the MAC has given me an opportunity to be an extended family member of the Bigfork community. It's a great place to work, work out, gather to see old friends, or make new ones!!

Summer Cameron

Summer was born and raised in Maui, Hawaii. She graduated from CU Boulder with a BA in history. She is one of the biggest nerds in Montana second to Shawn maybe. Despite living on the mainland for years, this island girl still freezes at below 80 degree temperatures. Therefore she prefers to brave the cold seasons (September through May) by staying inside with her fluffy kitty reading, playing video games, and watching anime.

Melissa is currently a certified personal trainer with NASM and is working on becoming a NASM certified nutritionist, NASM youth exercise specialist, and NASM women's exercise specialist.

Melissa is a mother of two boys and understands a parents biggest obstacle: time. “We as parents are so wrapped up and involved in our children’s lives, we often forget to incorporate our own heath and well being as an important part of the mix. I have always been involved in fitness of some form for as long as I can remember. My fitness journey started in school where I was involved with various athletic programs. I tried several different methods of athletic training, but only fell in love with one, lifting. Life however, got busy. It wasn't long before I let that passion fizzle. Years later, after having children, I started back into fitness with home workouts. Which were great for a while, but I felt I was lacking something. I started back in the gym. Always being a do-it-yourselfer, I tapped into what I had learned from school, and built on it from various methods of research. I began lifting again, so much so that I started to want to take my new found knowledge, strength, and body and do something with it. In 2017, I entered my first body building competition, took third place and qualified to compete in a national competition. I love bodybuilding and understand the dedication it takes to get there. Whether you are bodybuilding, looking to be more active, or somewhere in the middle, everyone is on their own fitness journey. It’s my goal to help you achieve your goals, whatever they are!

Janis Barton

Personal Trainer

Growing up with a pharmacist mother and a teacher-counselor father, I have always been around health and education in some form. Then, at the time I was a pre-nursing student at California State University Chico, I realized that my interests were centered more around pre-sickness health; diet, exercise, lifestyle choices and how these play such a significant role in overall health. Food had also always played a big role in my life. I put myself through school working in the restaurant business. This resulted in my achieving a degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management. After half of a lifetime in the Food Service Industry, I decided to return to my roots. Holistic Health and Nutrition Coaching is a perfect fit.

I work with the full spectrum of clients with quite varied needs (weight loss, more energy, better moods, better sleep, getting off medications…) and help put them on the path to their health and wellness goals with tailored nutritional and lifestyle strategies.

Janis is a Board Certified Holistic Health and Nutrition Coach through the Institute for Integrative Nutrition and the American Association of Drugless Practitioners.

Terri has earned professional certification as both a Personal Trainer and Certified Strength Coach through the NCSF – NCCA Accreditation. Her experience with injury prevention through proper form, with the understanding and ability to bring clients of all fitness levels to their potential, are valuable traits she offers. Functional fitness to include HIIT training, body weight exercises and strength/conditioning are her areas of focus and expertise.

Terri’s participation in and support of fitness have been a constant; however, an accident resulting in a broken back, six months of paralysis and a two year physical rehabilitative journey are the impetus for her immense passion and experience in the benefit of maintaining fitness. Terri earned her BS degree in Business Administration, then her MBA; she previously enjoyed a career in corporate business. A number of years ago she pursued her passion for fitness and changed direction.

Enjoying life on the cherry orchard with her wonderful husband, she is also a mother and proud Grandma. She enjoys training herself and others, a paddle-board with her husband, an occasional Spartan race, or hiking a local trail. She enjoys offering a variety of training programs that are specifically tailored to you and your needs. She cares enough to be a tough little trainer but also insists on including a good laugh!

I’ve lived in and loved the Flathead valley for 33 years, where I enjoy mountain biking, kayaking, hiking and cross-country skiing. I want to see others have a level of fitness and health to enjoy this area, and if they like, the great outdoors of Montana!

Cliff Palmer

Yoga Instructor

I have been involved in athletics my entire life. From running track in college, to playing racquetball, riding horses, and working out. I had to return to California in 2002 for my work and while there got involved with Yoga and swimming. I gave up the rigors of running as one day my body rebelled and no longer wanted to continue that long time habit. I became a Yoga teacher, and have taught at the Club since 2008. I also like using the stair stepper, elliptical, weights, and swimming. I have always been affiliated with an athletic club and Montana Athletic Club is by far the best club I have ever been involved with, from its friendliness, amenities, and wide range of activities.

My personal practice and teaching has evolved from a more rigorous style to a gentler approach, more tuned in with my body awareness, breathing, alignment, and posture. My class, Comfort Yoga, combines these elements to keep the body flexible, strong, and balanced. I value keeping body and mind moving with ease and flow. My mantra is, “Whatever Arises, Love that!”

Krista Sanderson

Yoga Instructor

Krista has been a certified yoga instructor since 2002 and has been teaching at MAC since 2006. Krista began practicing yoga in 2000 after training for a marathon that resulted in a running related injury. What began as a way to heal her body transformed into a love for the art of yoga. This translated into a connection between the mind, body and soul through movement, breath-work and meditation. She has studied various disciplines of yoga ranging from Ashtanga to Vinyasa Flow to Restorative with teachers including Patabhi Jois, Shiva Rea, and Rod Stryker, to name a few. Krista is also a AFAA trained personal trainer. Her style of yoga in her classes focus on gentle movement in combination with the breath, to promote deep relaxation of the body and mind.

Teresa Kennedy

Yoga Instructor

Yoga, to me, is about coming together as a community in a safe a loving environment, exploring our breath, our bodies and our sense of playful adventure! This time together allows us to focus on reconnecting with our true selves without the distractions of the world. Ego is left outside the room and we work on accepting where we are, right now. Remember that it is called “yoga practice” and not “yoga perfect”. The secret to having a strong, graceful, flexible body……keep coming to yoga. If you make it to class, the rest will take care of itself. I am humbled and privileged to be with each week and I look forward to seeing you soon. Namaste.
