Trail-Ready: Conditioning for Flathead Valley Hiking Season

Jewel Basin doesn’t care how your winter went. Four to six weeks of smart training will.

Around here, hiking season arrives fast — one week the trails are snowed in, the next your friends are planning a Jewel Basin loop with 2,000 feet of climbing. The gap between couch shape and trail shape is where sore knees and miserable descents live.

Climbing is single-leg strength. Step-ups, lunges and single-leg squats build the legs that carry you uphill — start bodyweight, then add dumbbells or a loaded pack. Two focused sessions a week is plenty.

The descent is what wrecks people. Going down, your quads work like brakes — long, controlled eccentric efforts. Train slow step-downs and downhill treadmill walking, and add core and balance work so rocky ground doesn’t rattle you.

Round it out with a weekly cardio base builder — incline treadmill, stair climber or a hard spin class — and a practice hike with your loaded pack before the big one. Want it programmed for you? Any MAC trainer can build a trail-ready block. The huckleberries are waiting.
