Strength Training After 50: The Best Investment You Can Make
Muscle is the currency of healthy aging — and it’s never too late to start earning it.
Starting around our thirties, adults lose muscle at a slow but steady rate — and the pace picks up after 50. That loss shows up as harder stairs, heavier grocery bags, and a little less confidence on icy Montana sidewalks. The good news: it’s remarkably reversible.
Research consistently shows that adults in their 50s, 60s, 70s and beyond build meaningful strength within weeks of starting a simple resistance program. Two or three sessions a week — machines, dumbbells, bands or bodyweight — is enough to move the needle.
Strength work also protects bone density, improves balance, supports joint health and helps regulate blood sugar. For many members, it’s the difference between watching the grandkids play and getting down on the floor to play with them.
If you haven’t lifted in years (or ever), you don’t have to figure it out alone. Any MAC trainer can build you a safe starting program, and an InBody scan gives you a baseline so you can watch the muscle come back. Start light, stay consistent, and enjoy the compound interest.
